About The Event
Soft Machine is one of the greatest UK avant/jazz-rock bands of all time. From their earliest days as a psychedelic band—sharing stages with Syd Barrett’s Pink Floyd and the Jimi Hendrix Experience—to becoming one of Europe's best-known "fusion" acts, their work has influenced generations and continues to be name-checked by today’s hip experimentalists.
The Legacy & Evolution
The current band is rooted in the celebrated 1970s era of the group that recorded the acclaimed album Softs (1975). The lineup is completed by outstanding sax star Theo Travis (known for his work with Robert Fripp, David Gilmour, and Steven Wilson).
In 2021, long-time bassist Roy Babbington retired from public performance. His chosen successor is Fred Thelonious Baker, a staple of the Canterbury scene for over 30 years and a regular collaborator with legends like Elton Dean, Hugh Hopper, and Phil Miller.
